Selecting a site for the North American Championship
Generally, the NA is rotated between 3 geographic regions:
- Great Lakes
- Mid Atlantic
- South West
Occasionally, NA will be held elsewhere to encourage class growth. If your fleet is interested to host a NA event, contact our 1st Vice President for coordination to avoid conflicting competitions. A formal proposal addressed to the 1st Vice President should be sent to the Class Office. Normally the USA Executive Officers will decide during the Annual Meeting, usually held during the Mid Winter event.
The USA J/22 Class Association prepared the following guidelines for you to consider when you submit your proposal:
- Proposed year and month of the event. Type of event i.e. North Americans or Worlds.
- Size of your local J/22 fleet. How many are active? How many boats are active in your area, say within a four to five hour drive? Do you have any boats for charter in your area, and if so, how many?
- Information about your yacht club. How many hoists do you have? Do you have a ramp? Are they on site or what is their proximity to the club? What are your mooring facilities? Are they slips, buoys, rafting on a wall or what? How many are there and are they reasonably well protected? Where do you park trailers? Do you have space for 50-70 and where are they in relation to the club? How many parking spaces do you have for vehicles and how close are they? Does your club offer food and beverage service? If so, what kind? Will regatta attendees be allowed to run an account for the duration of the event? What experience does your club have with running national level events or other large regattas? If you are not a yacht club as such, tell us about the organization that will be running the event. Tell us about the facilities you will use in regard to the above questions. Do you have any sort of a projected entry fee? Pictures and diagrams of your yacht club, plus any other relevant information will be appreciated.
- Tell us about your sailing area. Is it an inland lake? If so, how big is it? i.e. length by width, square miles, acres, etc. Is it on open water on the Great Lakes or the ocean, or Is It a bay or a river? How far is it from the club? Can you provide tow boats? What are your typical wind conditions? How are the tides and currents? Is it dead in the morning but building in the afternoon? Give us some idea of what to expect in terms of weather for the time of year.
- Tell us about your support facilities. Where is your club located in terms of access to major highways and interstates? Where are hotels and motels located, how far are they time wise and what are the price ranges? Are there any campgrounds nearby? Is there any possibility of billeting i.e. lodging out of town guests with local sailors? If so, how many? What types of restaurants are in the area? What other activities are nearby, things someone might want to do to take a vacation in conjunction with racing, or for their families to do while they are sailing? Information from the local Chamber of Commerce would be helpful, as would a local map showing your club in relation to all the above items as well as to the sailing area.
- Please provide any other information you feel helps make your club a great place for a national level event. Remember, people on the Site Selection Committee may not have been to your club or area, so we need you to provide us with the information needed to make our decision. What do you see as liabilities that you must deal with in terms of holding a national level regatta? Please be honest, we understand that no place is a perfect venue.
- The proposal should be signed and dated by the local J/22 Fleet Captain or representative, and an officer of the yacht club, either the Commodore, Vice Commodore, or Racing Chairman.
- Proposals should be submitted at least two years in advance to the current 1st Vice President or to the Class Office.
